Bells Farm School Crossing Campaign

Job Done! A safe crossing for Bells Farm at last

At long last, Cllr Mike Leddy and I are celebrating with parents, teachers and pupils at Bells Farm primary school after their crossing was finally installed across a busy Birmingham road after 10 years of campaigning.

The lack of a safe crossing outside the school, in Druids Heath, has caused huge concern after a string of incidents including one fatality. Council chiefs repeatedly told us that a crossing wouldn't be installed because it wasn't busy enough but then made a dramatic U-turn after Cllr Mike Leddy and I dressed up as lollipop men to highlight the problem. The council even tried to say that it had been planned for months, but a Freedom of Information request proved that there was no mention of it in the plans.

Teacher Elaine Dingley, who is head of the school council, said: "It is absolutely fantastic. We have been campaigning now for ten years, trying to get a crossing. I took over the school council and decided to make it a personal campaign. Throughout the campaign the council told us there was no chance and we were extremely disappointed. A few children were run over and one elderly person died two years ago. The road is so busy but we kept being told there wasn't enough traffic to justify a crossing."

Parent and teaching assistant Sylvia Sargant said: "It us such a dangerous road for children to cross. A number of times I have helped children and elderly people to get across the road."

Although I'm delighted, this took far too long and it's deplorable that it took such drastic action from Cllr Leddy and I to get the council to act. Far too many schools in our city don't have safe places for children to cross the busy roads and it shouldn't have to take action like this to get Birmingham City Council to realise how important this is.

Cllr Mike Leddy (Labour, Brandwood) and I swapped our offices and suits to be lollypop men for a day as part of our campaign for a school crossing at Bells Farm school in Brandwood.

For too long, Bells Farm has been without a safe crossing for parents and children to use and the council are still refusing to provide the school with a crossing. Have a read of the full story here.
